The Enemy Class 12 Summary – Chapter 4 Vistas

The Story is set in Japan during World War II. It highlights the conflict between patriotism and humanity. The main Character of this Story is Dr Sadao Hoki.

1. Introduction to Dr Sadao.

Dr Sadan was a Surgeon and scientist. He lived in Japan, but trained in America. He lives with his wife, Hana and children in a house near the sea. He is a great man in nature and loyal to his country.

2. Discovery of an Enemy One Evening

Dr Sadoo found a man lying on the beach. The man is found to be an American prisoner of war, badly injured by a bullet. If he helps the enemy, that is considered treason.

3. The Dilemma

Sadao is torn between his duty as a doctor and his duty as a patient. Hana supports his husband in his decision. Their servants refuse to serve with the American soldiers that has been sheltered, showing the fear of the war.

4. Saving the Soldier

Sadao takes the risk to operate on the prisoner and saves his life. During the recovery, Hana takes care of the American prisoners. The Soldier is grateful and trusts Sadao.

5. Fear of Exposure

Sadao was feared because someone might discover the truth. He informed a general who is very ill and dependent on Sadao’s treatment. The general secretly promises to send assassins to kill the prisoner, not blame Sadao.

6. Final Decision

No assassins arrive because the general has forgotten the matter. Realising danger, Sadao itself give a signal to the soldier to escape. This way, Sadao balances both his duties.

Conclusion

The story shows that humanity is greater than nationality. Sadao proves that being a true doctor means valuing human life above all. The message is that in times of hatred and war, compassion and kindness should guide human actions.
