Saheb lives in Seemapuri a place full of Dirtyness and devoid of resources like sewage and running water. 10 thousand ragpickers live here without any identity but with a ration card. The Garbage was the gold of ragpickers because it was the earning source of them. The author discusses the two sides where rich children through a pair of shoes because of a hole in them but the saheb wear a pair of slippers which have holes. Saheb also works at a tea stall and is paid 800 rupees for the daily meals. Sahe carrying a steel canister. The author talks that the steel canister looked heavier than his plastic bags which was his, and the canister is of the stall owner. Second Story of the Lost Spring The main character in the second story was Mukesh. Mukesh belongs to a family that makes bangles in Firozabad (India’s center of the glass bowing industry). Mukesh has a dream to be a motor mechanic and wants to learn to drive a car. The author tells about the conditions of traditional bangle makers who work in high temperatures and without proper light and air. over 20 thousand children work under these conditions even though it is illegal to work under harsh conditions. Mukesh family doesn’t have a proper house to live in. The author also told about the women who have to follow the old tradition of veiling their faces when an elder enters. When children work in such conditions affects their eyesight making them blind at a young age. Mukesh grandmother already accepts her lifestyle and calls her husband’s density. When someone asks them to form better living conditions they say that they have a fear to beaten up by police to do something illegal. Mukesh has a dream to be a motor mechanic and the author sees a flash of hope in her eyes. The author told Mukesh that he would like to be a pilot someday. Mukesh told the author that dreaming of a pilot seems beyond his reach. Conclusion The story concludes that there are two different stories of Saheb and Mukesh about how their childhood was taken away by poverty and the burden of society.
